Course overview

As you all might know by know, my new free course "0-100: How to illustrate a car from reference" is coming out in just two days. I can't wait for you to go through it and let me know what you think.

With that said, I thought it would be interesting for you to read about what you can expect from it.

  • It's a 5-step system for absolute beginners with zero previous experience in drawing, painting or any kind of art form.
  • It's self contained. This means that you will start from nothing and will end with a finished illustration.
  • Includes both text and visual examples (images and sub 30 second videos).

The 5-step system:

  • Getting reference: You will learn about where you can get reference from, and how. A reference image is also included for you to start right away.
  • Outlining the car: You will learn easily and from scratch about Polygonal and curved outlines, Pen Tool usage and Nodes transformation.
  • Illustrating big shapes: Think of them as wheels, windows, headlights, etc. The idea is to define big sections of interest, and detail them later. The process to do this is the same as outlining, but in smaller sections.
  • Diving into deeper details: Detail vs the illusion of detail. What to include and leave out. Negative space: what it is and how to use it to your advantage.
  • Finishing the whole illustration's look: Add deep shadows below the car and in the darkest parts like wheel wells. Make some last decisions on the overall look of the illustration.

What's next

There are lots of plans for the near and not so near future. Some I can share, some I can't just yet, but in general, what you can expect is:

  • The free course will evolve. I find your feedback absolutely key and I want you to tell me what you think about the course. Was it fun? Did you learn? How can it improve? I want to make it the best I can.
  • I am considering creating a video version of the step by step section of the course. I don't know yet if I will end up doing it, and in case I do, I don't know if it will be part of the free course or a small-fee add-on.
  • On a more longer term view, I want to develop the illustration further into a fully fledged "classic Creating Lightly" illustration. That means, with more lighting and shadow details, colour, background, etc.
  • While doing that, I plan to create more modules to teach people how to tackle each of those extra aspects. It would be the natural "next step" for people who loved the free illustration from reference course.

Let's keep in touch!

And that's it for this one. It was a little bit long, but I think you guys are interested in these things as much as I am. Let me know!

Feel free to reply to this email telling me what you're excited about the most, and I hope you enjoyed it. See you on the next one.

All the best,
