There are a lot of tips about how to shoot a moving car in your photography.
But the best tip I've read on it was originally shared with me by my buddy Antony Ingram (Bluesky/Twitter):
Use 1/80 shutter speed
The results (and more below):
3 reasons why it works:
- Reason #1: It freezes the car in place while keeping a blurry background (everyone loves some suave motion blur in their panning shots!).
- Reason #2: It does not freeze the action so much that it looks like everything is stationary (especially turning wheels!).
- Reason #3: It is not so high that you need a TON of light, but of course daylight is optimal for this setting.
Some extra learnings I got from practicing:
- Tip #1: Use the Shutter Speed Priority setting in your camera (S mode). This will let you pick the shutter speed and let the camera take care of the rest.
- Tip #2: If you're working under direct sunlight, it might be too bright. An ND filter to step it down a bit can be your friend (kind of like sunglasses for your camera).
- Tip #3: Use burst mode. I got away with some single shots, but most of the time you are better off tracking the car and shooting away, to then pick the good, sharp images.
- Tip #4: Don't be afraid to zoom in. If you have a long lens or a zoom lens, take advantage of it. You will get cropped shots that will feel at the same time more intimate with the car and its details, and much more dramatic in terms of action.
If you are at all interested in photographing moving cars, this information might take your game to the next level.
If you've tried them, do you agree? What other tips would you recommend for beginners?
That's it for today. If you enjoyed it, let me know!
And if you would like to share some of your moving cars photography for me to share in a future email or in socials (crediting you, of course), reply to this email with you favourite photo and I will share the ones I like the most.
See you on the next one.
All the best,
Juanma from Creating Lightly
